The weather all day had been sunny, breezeless and most importantly clear, so it was looking good for the Lunar eclipse from 19:30 until 21:00 BST that evening, but, as is often the way with the weather and astronomical events clouds began forming around 5pm. undeterred I packed up my camera, telescope and tripod and headed down to Dunwich Beach, I wasn't alone, there were a large amount of people gathering on the beach by 7pm.

Dunwich pebble beach, facing North toward Walberswick and Southwold, showing grounded red fishing boat and lots of people looking out to sea waiting for the lunar eclipse

With a thick band of cloud sat squarely on the horizon it wasn't looking promising, but we waited. People saw that I had a telescope set up and we chatted and discussed what time it would appear and where on the horizon to look. While they all stared out in hope of glimpsing something magical with the moon, they where unaware of the magic happening in the west. I turned my gaze to one of the finest sunsets I've seen in a long while, and though my phone camera didnt do it justice, i think I manage to capture the essence of what some of us saw

dark forground of the beach, huts and cafe silhouette against a vivid sunset filled with all the colours of a rainbow but filling the sky
Looking west as the sunsets behind Dunwich

Rich gold flowed into orange and reds, though the camera couldn't get the greens and turquoise that blended between the reds and blues it was a sight to behold!

vivid sunset with colours bouncing off lowlevel clouds, with a dark silhouette of beach huts, cafe and people
Looking west as the sunset lit up the sky with a rainbow of colour

and then it began to darken as the sun gave out its last light, and the eclipse moon began to rise above the horizon, behind thick cloud there was nothing to see, and most people on the beach started to head off the beach, saddened that they didn't get to see any glimpse of the moon............ and then at 20:15.....

close up photo of the moon 75% of its face is shadowed by earth eclipsing it. It glows an dull orange

out of thick cloud a small gap appeared, the wait was begining to pay off as the orange red glow of a partial eclipse appeared, it soon vanished again behind the clouds but I could see some more gaps appearing so I waited.
